Her spirit exists between

the wind and water

The words flowed through my body and spirit on a rainy morning in February. My mind was searching for calm and my grandma was on my heart. She would have been 101 years old that day and though she had since long passed, her presence was with me on the trail that morning as I communed with the elements.

It had been about a year since I started writing poetry and I felt the healing magic the words had on my spirit. I had long dreamed of writing a book but I didn’t know what form it would take. All that I knew for sure was why I wanted to write for my daughter.

Growing up I watched the women in my family struggle with their body image and I craved answers to overcome the same imbalance in my own heart. For many years I imagined writing a perfectly planned guide for my daughter. I decided that in order to be of value for my daughter, I needed to create a step by step book she could refer to as she got older.

I kept waiting for the right time, the right moment, the right structure that would provide value in a book. What I didn’t realize was I was trying to create a story that wasn’t authentic to me.

On that rainy February morning, I felt discouraged. Though I had taken so many steps forward in becoming closer to my spirit, becoming more comfortable in my own skin, I still felt a feeling of lack. I felt as if I should be more peaceful, more connected, more beautiful.

As I studied the elements of water and wind, I thought about the power and softness both vessels represent. I thought about my grandma, how she suffered greatly in life but still left a powerful legacy of beauty and love. That’s when I understood, her spirit exists between the wind and water, a sacred pocket of divinity and grace.

All at once, the collection of poems I had written and the theme of my book made sense. It wasn’t about sharing a message of perfection with my daughter or with the women in my life. It was about sharing exactly what is true in the moment — finding the beauty through the forces of life.

Your beauty tells a story

Between the Wind and Water holds elements of every woman that came before me. This book offers a gentle unweaving of self and a message of connecting to innate beauty — one’s spirit.

The elements of nature play their own part in the telling of this story. Earth, Fire, Wind, Water — each carry their own wisdom of power and softness. Their purpose shifts when joined in unity and play a critical roll in destruction, nourishing, and balance.

A poetic story of self-discovery told through the wisdom of the elements.
